Scarallo Will Drive for Andersen Racing in 2007 Indy Pro Series
FAIRFIELD, N.J., Feb. 1 - Dan Andersen of
Andersen Racing is pleased to announce that
Joey Scarallo of Smithtown, N.Y.
will drive an Andersen Racing entry in the 2007 Indy Pro Series.
Scarallo joins Andrew Prendeville of Morristown, N.J. as the drivers the
Fairfield, N.J.-based
team will use for the entire 16-race season. It begins
Saturday, March 24 at Homestead-Miami
Speedway in Homestead, Fla.
The Indy Pro Series is the official development series of IndyCar.
All the races will be
televised on ESPN2.
Scarallo has been successfully competing in Trans-Am cars since 2003, so he's
getting
back to his open-wheel roots in 2007.
He started driving competitively in karts at the age of 11 and quickly became
a force to be
reckoned with in the Long Island Karting Association, winning
three championships with that
organization in 1993. He's also won two national
championships in the International Karting Federation.
He then advanced to Formula Ford 2000 cars, becoming the youngest Bertil Roos
Formula
Ford 2000 series champion ever in 1995. The following year he
recorded three top-10 finishes in the
tough U.S. Formula Ford 2000 national
championship. He ran a limited schedule in 1997 before tacking
the Toyota
Atlantic
series
in an under-funded effort in 2000.
He got the chance to drive Trans-Am cars in 2003, snatched it, and was
immediately impressive.
He won the three-hour Puerto Rico Grand Prix in 2004.
He
had two podium finishes in 2005
(Portland and Cleveland), and finished fifth in
the point standings in a very close point battle that year.
He only ran six of 12 American GT Road Racing Assn. American GT Challenge
races in 2006, but
he set that series on its ear when he won five of the six
races he ran. He finished fourth in the
point standings, just one point out of
third. He totally dominated the two races at Lime Rock
Park and at Mosport,
winning the poles with new track records and then setting new race lap records
in
winning those events.
"We're delighted that Joey will be driving for us in 2007," said John
Andersen, who manages the team's
Indy Pro Series program. "Dan and I got to know
him
when he was running F2000 cars, and we
know he can get the job done."
Scarallo is looking forward to racing open-wheel cars again. He first drove
an Indy Pro Series car last
week when he quickly passed his rookie test at
Homestead. He said the Indy Pro Series car he'll
campaign in 2007 is a new car
that is owned by his father, and it's fun to drive.
"The car was great; it was just very different from the Trans-Am cars I've
been running," Scarallo
said after passing his rookie test. "It took me a
little bit to get used to it because it's so different
than what I have been
running, but it seems like it's going to be a lot of fun."
Most of the tracks Scarallo will compete at this year will be new to him.
"I ran at Sears Point before, but we used a different layout," he noted.
"I've run at Watkins Glen
in the past, but on the short course, not the long
course. All the rest of the tracks will be new to me.
"The ovals will be the most challenging for me because so much of that
depends on the car's set-up,"
Scarallo continued. "But then, that makes it more
fun."
He's especially looking forward to the street-course races.
"I've always done well on street courses running Trans-Am," he said. "They
seem to be more of a
driver's track, because there isn't much room."
One of the tracks that will be new to Scarallo is the historic Indianapolis
Motor Speedway. The Indy Pro
Series has three races there in 2007; one on the
oval May 25 as a support event to the Indianapolis 500
and two on the road
course June 16 and June 17 as support races for the United States Grand Prix
Formula 1 race.
Many great race car drivers never get to race at the Indianapolis Motor
Speedway. Although Scarallo
is looking forward to the experience, he has even
higher aspirations.
"It will be good to race there, but for me it's just the first step," he
said. "I'm not doing it just so someday
I can tell my son that I raced at the
Indianapolis Motor Speedway. For me the dream won't be complete
until I've
actually won the Indy 500," he said.
"That's my goal," he added firmly.
Scarallo has already competed at another famous American track, Daytona
International Speedway.
He competed in the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona in 2002.
Scarallo, who was born in Adelaide, Australia, was graduated from Smithtown
Christian School on
Long Island. In addition to being a race car driver he
manages Autotrend Tire & Wheel Co., his family's
wheel-importing business in
Lindenhurst, N.Y.
One person who will be cheering Scarallo on in 2007 will be Darrell Waltrip,
three-time NASCAR
Winston Cup champion, 1989 Daytona 500 winner, and current
TV race commentator.
At the age of 13 Scarallo was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
While bedridden and awaiting
surgery, Waltrip, his childhood hero,
called him to wish him good luck.
Scarallo reunited with Waltrip in 2003 when the Trans-Am cars appeared with
NASCAR NEXTEL
Cup at Infineon Speedway in Sonoma, Calif. Scarallo still keeps
in touch with Waltrip to this day.
By joining Andersen Racing for the 2007 season, Scarallo will work with a
unique team that
offers a comprehensive, three-tiered approach to prepare
drivers
for the major leagues of
American open-wheel racing. It uses the Hankook
Tires Formula Ford 2000 series, the Star
Mazda Championship presented by
Goodyear, and then the Indy Pro Series to hone rising stars' skills.
