Baas and Miller Have a Top-Five Car Until Mechanical Problems Develop
In Saturday's Rolex Series Race at Homestead
HOMESTEAD, Fla., March 24 - What looked like a sure top-five finish in the GT
class of Saturday's Linder Industrial Komatsu Grand Prix of Miami Rolex
Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway disappeared for Ian Baas and Bob Miller
due
to mechanical difficulties.
Baas, of Noblesville, Ind., was in fifth place and flying when a wheel
bearing broke on the At Speed Motorsports Porsche GT3 Cup No. 28 that he drives
with
Miller, of Sykesville, Md. Before the damage was done the car's outer CV
joint broke, and although the team tried to make repairs and return to the race
it had to call it a day with 35 laps and an hour complete.
Luckily Baas was able to bring the car to a stop in Turn 6 without hitting
the wall or anything else, and its only damage was mechanical.
The entry is sponsored by Celette and Ian Global Shipping.
The team's official order of finish was 23rd in GT and 43rd overall.
"It was frustrating," Baas said afterwards. "I was comparing
the times we
had run with the times that the cars that did finish in the top five were
running, and we would have been fourth or maybe even third," he said.
"I ran about 15 laps and had it up to fifth; the car was going to the front,"
he continued. "The wheel bearing broke, and that kind of started a cascade
of other problems. I just pulled off in Turn 6; I didn't hit anything.
"It was so much fun for awhile," he added. "We would have had
a top-five car
for sure. We had no power steering, which was making things interesting. We
would have been even faster with power steering."
On Friday afternoon Miller encountered some handling problems with the car
during qualifying which caused him to start 17th in GT and 37th overall in the
44-car race. His qualifying time was 1:24.035 (98.530 miles per hour) for the
2.3-mile road course. The team had been tenth in GT in the rainy first
practice session on Thursday with a 1:22.889 (99.893 mph) and sixth in GT in
Friday
morning's practice session with a 1:21.000 (102.222 mph). It was 11th in
Saturday morning's practice session with a 1:22.058 (100.904 mph).
Baas, the 2006 Rolex 24 at Daytona winner, ran a 1:22.774 on lap 28 of the
race.
The two-and-a-half-hour event, which accompanied the Indy Racing League's
IndyCar and Indy Pro Series season openers, was broadcast live on SPEED.

Series' Web site at grand-am.com.
Immediately after Saturday's race Baas was off on a flight to Germany, where
he and Randy Pobst will share some high-performance driving tips to some Audi
and Porsche Club enthusiasts at the Nurburgring and then at Spa in Belgium.
Baas' next Rolex Series race is April 26-29 at VIRginia International Raceway
in Alton, Va. On Friday he added the SPEED World Challenge GT race at Long
Beach, Calif., on April 13-15 to his schedule. His next Touring Car race in that
series in the STaSIS Motorsport Audi is May 17-19 at Miller Motorsports Park
in Tooele, Utah.
Last weekend's Touring Car race from Sebring will be broadcast on SPEED tomorr
ow (Sunday, March 25) at 1:30 p.m. Eastern time. It will be rerun on Monday,
March 26, at noon.
