Andersen Racing's Vilarinho Finishes 13th
In Mid-Ohio Firestone Indy Lights Race

LEXINGTON, Ohio, Aug. 8
- Driving Andersen Racing's Allied Building
Products No. 4, Giancarlo Vilarinho of Sao Paulo, Brazil started 15th and finished
13th in his first Firestone Indy Lights race Sunday at the Mid-Ohio Sports
Car Course.

That was almost good enough for the distinction of being the driver who
improved the most positions. The Force for Earth Hard Charger award went
instead to Charlie Kimball, who increased his standings by one more spot when he
started sixth and finished third.

Vilarinho did receive $1,500 in bonus money from Firestone, however, in
addition to the regular Firestone Indy Lights prize money.

Vilarinho had no incidents in the 40-lap race. Although he spun in
qualifying and two drivers spun during the race, he was not among them Sunday.

His goal was simply to finish and get experience, which he did.

He moved up through attrition at the start and the end of the event.

He got one spot when Gustavo Yacaman's Dallara rolled to a stop on a pace
lap. Yacaman later rejoined the field and finished six laps down.

Vilarinho got the other spot at the end of the race when David Martinez
spun into a gravel trap on the last lap.

Mid-Ohio is notorious for being a challenging place to pass, and that was
the case on Sunday. There were no full-course cautions to tighten the field
either. Polesitter Martin Plowman led all 40 laps to record his first series
victory over Dan Clarke and Kimball.

Vilarinho's fastest lap in Sunday's race was a 1:17.47 on his 36th circuit,
which was better than the 1:18.0560 he ran in qualifications Saturday.

"This was my first race in Firestone Indy Lights, and it was difficult
because everything is new to me," said Vilarinho, who made steady progress
throughout the weekend. "I am used to Formula BMW, which is much slower compared
to Firestone Indy Lights. But I didn't spin in the race and I was able to
finish, which was my goal.

"We had a little understeer and I had trouble with fourth gear too, but I
learned a lot that will help me in the future," added Vilarinho, who hopes to
find funding in order to compete in the series full time next year.

Vilarinho plans to make his second series start at the next race, the
Carneros 100 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. on Sunday, Aug. 22.
